As Montrealers head to the polls on Oct. 5, they should be seeking out a vision for the city and province like the one being espoused by Prime Minister Mark Carney. One that accepts the times we’re in and troubles we face, that recognizes that a rapidly aging population, structural rigidities and now a deepening trade war have rendered Canada’s economic model obsolete. One that provides an energetic, powerful response to these converging crises and challenges. One that brings forth a new model built on more internally generated growth from major infrastructure projects, the rapid diversification of the country’s trade with the rest of the world and a unified internal market.
In short, a vision that provides new sources of growth, jobs and prosperity for a new age.
Montreal, the economic engine that powers Quebec’s economy and prosperity, needs such a fresh vision and policies that would befit it. Which party’s platform would best provide this? Which one would best deliver new sources of growth and jobs, public transit modernization and expansion, education and health care reform, new housing and sensible immigration policies?
