‘Talkin’ Turkey’ comedy comes to Surrey with trailblazing Mom’s the Word Collective

This holiday comedy is for moms and the people who support and laugh with them.
A mid-October run of Talkin’ Turkey in Surrey welcomes Mom’s the Word Collective, five women at the heart of a theatrical movement launched in 1993.
This fall they turn the “season of thanksgiving” into the “season of forgiving” at Surrey Arts Centre from Oct. 14-24.
This Arts Club Theatre Company’s touring production stars Jill Daum (as Jill), Erla Faye Forsyth (Standby), Alison Kelly (Alison), Barbara Pollard (Barbara), Colleen Winton (Robin) and Deborah Williams (Deb).
Mom’s the Word: Talkin’ Turkey debuted on Granville Island in October 2022. Daum, Kelly, Pollard and Williams, along with Robin Nichol, created the hilarious holiday hit, advertised as “a theatrical feast flavoured with big belly laughs, stuffed with dysfunction and topped with a soupçon of sarcasm—all served on a platter of naked truth.”
The comedy Talkin’ Turkey is warm, irreverent and relatable, and nothing is off-limits including family traditions, food obsessions, body image, aging parents, teenagers and daily heroics of keeping it all together.
“Over the last 30 years,” says Ashlie Corcoran, Arts Club artistic director, “the incredible, brilliant women from Mom’s the Word Collective have hilariously, vulnerably and candidly shared with us what it means to rear small children, live with teenagers, and, finally, become empty-nesters.
“Now, with their trademark wit, joy, and irreverence, the Moms offer up their truths about the holidays. We are so pleased to remount this production on tour, allowing new audiences to see this deeply funny, distinctly Canadian work.”
Tickets for the Surrey dates are sold on purchase.surrey.ca, or call 604-501-5580. Special shows at the arts centre include a Paint at the Play Performance (drop off kids aged six to 11 for a free art class while you enjoy a matinee show, Oct. 17), a post-show chat with the actors (Oct. 22) and a Saturday matinee with VocalEye Audio description for patrons who are blind or partially sighted (Oct. 24).
