Former B.C. Conservative MLA Brent Chapman withdraws from Surrey South race amid threats

Former B.C. Conservative legislator Brent Chapman will not run for OneBC in Surrey South in the Oct. 24 election, following what the party described as months of intense pressure and threats.

Chapman had announced last month that he would join OneBC after his wife, Kerry-Lynne Findlay, resigned as Conservative leader amid a caucus revolt. However, his name was not included in the final candidate list released by Elections BC on Sunday.

OneBC said the decision for Chapman to step back was mutual, citing the “strains of the last few months” and emphasizing the importance of family and security.

Findlay resigned less than four months after winning the Conservative leadership, following weeks of internal divisions and defections. OneBC said Chapman had taken a principled stance but supported his decision not to run.

OneBC was formed as a splinter group from the B.C. Conservatives. Its interim leader, former Conservative MLA Dallas Brodie, is running to retain her seat.
