A Mississauga mayoral candidate says police are investigating after a volunteer with his campaign was attacked by a person armed with a knife Monday night while putting up election signs.

The volunteer was installing signs in the Park Royal area on behalf of City of Mississauga Ward 2 Coun. Alvin Tedjo when they were “confronted by a stranger and attacked with a knife,” Tedjo said in an email statement Tuesday morning, adding the volunteer sustained “non-life-threatening injuries.”

Peel Regional Police told INSAUGA Canada early Tuesday afternoon a 60-year-old Mississauga man has been charged with assault with a weapon in connection with the incident.

“We can confirm that Peel Regional Police have arrested and charged a man after an individual placing an election campaign sign in Mississauga was allegedly threatened with a knife on the evening of Oct. 5,” police said in an email. “The victim was able to disarm the suspect and sustained minor injuries.”

Police said the accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

The Tedjo campaign didn’t provide any additional details about the incident or victim beyond the candidate’s initial statement.

“Last night, one of our volunteers was confronted by a stranger and attacked with a knife while installing election signs. Thankfully, our volunteer only suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” Tedjo’s statement reads. “I have spoken with the victim to offer my support as they recover from this altercation. I have also been in touch with Peel Police as they investigate this incident.

“Our campaign has always been about bringing positive change to Mississauga and building a safer city,” the statement continues. “Most importantly, our campaign is run on the strength of volunteers who generously donate their time because they believe in a better Mississauga.
