A supermarket in Mississauga will close and be replaced with a discount grocery store next year.
The Metro store at Meadowvale Town Centre, 6677 Meadowvale Town Centre Circle, is slated for closure, a Metro spokesperson told INSAUGA Canada.
“I can confirm that the Metro store will be converted to a Food Basics in February 2027,” the spokesperson, Stephanie Bonk, said in an email. “The store will remain open until then and the conversion is expected to take approximately three to four weeks. A specific reopening date has not been finalized.”
Metro Inc. owns the Food Basics banner, a discount grocery store. This summer, the company announced plans to convert 10 existing Metro supermarkets in Ontario, according to a Retail Insider story.
A store in Toronto, on Queen Street West, just east of Dufferin Street, will also be converted to a Food Basics, Metro confirmed this month.
The switch is in response to economic changes.
“Customers are increasingly looking for value-oriented grocery options, and this conversion will allow us to better respond to those expectations while strengthening our discount offering in Ontario,” Bonk said earlier this month.
Some Mississauga residents seem happy with the change.
“Metro’s prices are way too high for the amount of low-income neighbourhoods immediately surrounding the area,” one person said on Reddit. “The same items at No Frills and Food Basics cost almost double. Glad to know they’re finally replacing it with some affordable groceries for families.”

However, some community members are concerned about Metro employees losing their jobs.
It is not clear how the store conversation will impact employees.
“It’s too early to determine the outcome for all employees; our focus remains on supporting our team members throughout the transition and ensuring they understand the options available to them through their applicable collective agreement,” Bonk said.
