Winnipeg police say their continued crackdown on open drug use and trafficking in areas of high concern led to an arrest and the seizure of drugs and a weapon on Tuesday morning.
The Winnipeg Police Service says officers patrolling in the West End business district observed a man allegedly openly selling drugs on Portage Avenue.
The man was arrested, and police say they seized from him about $100 worth of fentanyl, $290 cash and a sawed-off shotgun.
The 25-year-old was charged with various drug and firearm offences and was detained in custody.
In August, the WPS extended its efforts to curb open drug use and trafficking into the end of summer and fall, following a 10-day enforcement blitz at the beginning of July.
The initiative sees a visible police presence in specific areas identified by crime data, tips and complaints, and emergency calls for service, such as Point Douglas, Osborne Village, Spence and the Exchange District.
Police are expected to revisit the initiative next month.
In Wednesday’s news release on this latest arrest, WPS said the “proactive patrols and engagement efforts are continuing as part of a broader drug enforcement initiative.”
“The Winnipeg Police Service recognizes the concerns raised by local businesses and residents regarding open drug use, drug trafficking, and related criminal activity. Police continue to hear firsthand the impacts these issues are having on community safety and the prosperity of local businesses.”
