After the game, Ovechkin reflected on his final home opener.
“It was a huge crowd. My kids announced my name. It was a special moment,” the Capitals captain said to the media.
He added that his sons were nervous before announcing his name.
“I told them, ‘you don’t have to be worried. Don’t be nervous, just say it and it’s going to be fine,” Ovechkin said.
Ovechkin was drafted by the Capitals with the No. 1 pick in the 2004 NHL Draft. His 929 career goals are the most in NHL history. He helped the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup championship in 2018.
In his 22 NHL seasons, Ovechkin has won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL points leader once (2007-08), the Hart Trophy as the League MVP three times (2007-08, 2008-09, 2012-13) and the Rocket Richard Trophy as the top goal scorer nine times (2007-08, 2008-09, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20).
