Connor also scored in the second period, Cole Perfetti had a goal and Skinner made 32 saves for the Jets (3-0-1), who have points in four straight games to begin the season. Scheifele and Dylan Samberg each had two assists.
“It was a real gritty win,” Winnipeg coach Scott Arniel said. “To come off four (games) in six (days), and (the Avalanche) sitting here not having played in three or four days — we knew they were going to bring a lot of speed, we knew it was going to be a fast game. I thought we did a pretty good job of trying to deny the middle of the ice as much as possible. A lot of what they were getting was coming from the outside.”
Jaden Schwartz and Fedor Svechkov each had a goal and an assist, and Mackenzie Blackwood made 16 saves for the Avalanche (2-1-0), who lost their first game of the season.
“We gave up a couple goals on soft plays in our net front, sealing guys out and allowing them to get sticks on the pucks on deflections,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. “But probably the most disappointing, you give up a partial odd-man rush late in the game and against their top line, who had a really good night, and they capitalized again. So, after battling back from 2-1 to make it 2-2, you’ve got to find a way to salvage at least a point, take it to overtime and see what happens.”
After a scoreless first period, Schwartz got a lucky break off a mishandled puck in the offensive zone to make it 1-0 Avalanche at 2:51 of the second.
“We had looks,” Schwartz said. “Their goalie made some big saves. There’s pucks around the net there, but it was a tight checking game.”
