Despite growing bilingualism, some young anglophone Quebecers continue to leave for better job opportunities and because they feel excluded and question whether they fully belong in Quebec society, the co-author of a new study says.
“The research is quite clear that having an accent is something that can have impacts and can lead to discrimination, and identity and the sense of belonging are another part of it,” Simon-Pierre Lacasse, a historian at Concordia University, said in an interview.
“In spite of bilingualism and capacity to participate in Quebec society in their employment and their everyday life, some of them feel that their capacity to belong in this society is limited.”
