The Kingston Frontenacs won their second road game in as many nights, beating the Steelheads 4-2 in Brampton Friday night with centre Aleks Kulemin and rookie goaltender Royden Smith showing the way.
Kulemin earned first-star honors, scoring the go-ahead goal on a net-front deflection early in the second period, and then midway through the frame he set up the game-winning goal on a two-on-one, setting the puck on a tee for import defenceman Adam Goljer skating up the right wing. Beyond the scoring summary, Kulemin won 15 of 24 faceoffs and controlled play, restored to his line from last year, Robin Kuzma on his left, Nolan Snyder on the right wing.
At the other end of the rink, the 17-year-old Smith 29 of 31 shots to pick up his second win of his OHL career in a rink that he would have known from his minor-hockey days with the Toronto Marlboros. Smith was especially sound in the third period when the Steelheads peppered the Kingston goal with 14 shots. Smith’s best save in this stretch came on a point-blank shot by Geno Carcone. The snag left the Brampton centre looking to the rafters and biting the shaft of his stick in frustration.
