Vancouver Canucks News & Notes

Vancouver opened against Edmonton on Sept. 29 and left with a 6-5 overtime win, with Paul Cotter scoring twice, including a shorthanded goal in the first period and the winner 1:59 into the extra period on a feed from Max Sasson. Jonathan Lekkerimaki and Elias Pettersson also scored in a four-goal third. Kevin Lankinen stopped 32 of 37 shots. The Canucks were outshot 28-23 and outhit 38-13, and blocked 21 shots while winning 40 percent of faceoffs

The rematch in Vancouver two nights later produced a 9-7 final, with the Canucks scoring four times in the third period. Marco Rossi had two goals in the opening five minutes of the frame, Pettersson added a power-play marker and Jamie Oleksiak scored late. Vancouver finished with 28 hits and 27 giveaways. Elsewhere, Elliotte Friedman reported the Canucks are among the teams considering a trade for Flames forward Connor Zary.

New York Rangers News & Notes

The Rangers lost Igor Shesterkin for the remainder of the season to a lower-body injury suffered Friday against Washington, when the goaltender slid across to stop a shot and had to be helped off the ice without putting weight on his leg. New York entered that game 4-1-0 and atop the Metropolitan Division before falling 3-1. Backup Joonas Korpisalo is also sidelined, leaving Dylan Garand in line for the bulk of the work. Garand posted a 22-save shutout in his first start and allowed one goal on 12 shots in relief.

The vacancy has drawn the Rangers into speculation about Connor Hellebuyck, who requested a trade from Winnipeg, did not report to training camp and was suspended by the Jets. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said during Saturday’s Headlines segment that a move to New York is unlikely, citing the financial commitments involved alongside Shesterkin’s contract and the club’s other roster needs. Internally, the organization also has Callum Tung in the minors. Pending unrestricted free agents such as Samuel Montembeault and Jordan Binnington have been floated as lower-cost alternatives.

Players To Watch

Jake DeBrusk — Vancouver Canucks

DeBrusk fired seven shots last time out, more than double any other Canuck in the lineup, and still came away with just one assist in 17:15. That kind of single-game volume without a goal makes him a sensible shots-on-goal play tonight, and the finish should follow if the looks keep coming.

Pavel Dorofeyev — New York Rangers

Dorofeyev led the Rangers’ listed skaters with four shots last game while picking up an assist in 19:33, the heaviest forward workload outside J.T. Miller. With Vancouver’s top pair struggling to tilt the ice, he’s the Ranger most likely to turn that shot volume into a goal tonight.
