An investigation into drugs bought on a “dark web marketplace” being shipped through the mail has led to charges for a man from Mississauga, police say.
The Caledon Community Street Crime Unit and officers with the Covert Internet Intelligence Unit began investigating suspected drug shipments earlier in the summer, the OPP says in a release on Tuesday.
Police believed a high volume of drugs was being bought on the dark web and moved through the mail.
Officers say they arrested a suspect on Aug. 25 at a Canada Post location in Mississauga, and seized two packages containing various drugs that were to be shipped to addresses across Canada.
The arrest led to police raids of several residences and vehicles within the Greater Toronto Area, and the OPP says officers seized approximately 600 grams of suspected fentanyl, approximately 35 grams of suspected cocaine, $40,000 in Canadian currency, drug trafficking paraphernalia and numerous electronic devices.
The OPP says Jermoll Bain, 33, of Mississauga, has been charged with 16 counts of failure to comply with release order, nine counts of possession of proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000, and trafficking-related offences.
Jermaine Willis, 34, of North York, has also been charged with possession of proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000.
Bain was scheduled to make a court appearance in Brampton on Tuesday, while Willis will make a court appearance on Oct. 29.
