Works by several artists are featured in different fall exhibits at Surrey Art Gallery including “In the Folds of Memory” in the main hall, a space for art created by Farheen Haq and Russna Kaur.
An early-October Woven Tenderly Art Party celebrated the launch of new exhibits also focused on “Triple Burner Flower Field” by S F Ho and “Tender Threads,” showcasing sculptures by Sena Cleave and deconstructed textiles of Jonathan Alfaro.
Also at SAG this fall are “Marking the Seasons” (Scenes of Bear Creek Park painted by members of South Surrey and White Rock Art Society) and “Making Connections” (works from the permanent collection selected by gallery docents).
Community weaving with Haq will be done Oct. 22 during an evening event where participants are invited to “slow down, weave alongside one another and contribute to a growing communal artwork,” part of the “In the Folds of Memory” exhibit. Admission is free.
For families, an Art Jam on Sunday, Oct. 25 offers “a creative afternoon of artmaking and interactive gallery experiences,” 1:30 p.m. start. Call 604-501-5566 to register or email gallerytours@surrey.ca (space is limited).
“In the Folds of Memory” is an exhibit of paintings, installations, videos and textiles “that weave together stories of family, identity and cultural memory shaped by South Asian motifs and patterns.”
Kaur’s expansive, multi-surface paintings “unfold as living landscapes of recollection where colour, texture and form trace personal, emotional and intergenerational South Asian histories,” raves Jas Lally, SAG associate curator of engagement.
Compelling is Haq’s “Revelation #2,” a collection of bricks that border digital video of hands sifting through clay pieces, on the gallery floor.
Located in an adjacent hall, “Triple Burner Flower Field” is a mixed media installation with a floor of clay, acupuncture needle, yarrow, mugwort and other medicinal plants.
Meantime, applications are open to join Surrey Art Gallery’s docent team, which leads school children on tours of the facility at Bear Creek Park. Training begins Jan. 14, 2027, according to a post on surrey.ca. Visit the website for details or email volunteer programmer Johanna Lasner, artsvolunteer@surrey.ca.
