Montreal will hire 52 additional special constables, deploy more police officers and expand social intervention teams in its métro network as part of six measures announced Tuesday to improve safety ahead of winter.
The plan, unveiled at Place-des-Arts station, also includes expanded surveillance and more frequent métro service. It comes after years of efforts to address safety concerns in the network, which faces added pressure during colder months as people experiencing homelessness seek warmth in stations.
“The métro is an essential service, and everyone should be able to use it with confidence,” Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada said.
