A Mississauga man has been charged with assault after a demonstrator was attacked from behind and punched several times in the head at a downtown Toronto event this past weekend, police say.
Detectives with the Toronto Police hate crime squad said they arrested a suspect on Monday after a man turned himself in to police officers at 52 Division.
Police said the incident unfolded shortly before 5 p.m. last Saturday during a demonstration in the Yonge Street and Grosvenor Street area of downtown Toronto.
“The victim was walking northbound on Yonge Street, near Grosvenor Street, and was engaged in a conversation with another demonstrator” when they were approached from behind by a man and punched “several times in the head without provocation,” police said in a news release on Wednesday.
The victim fell to the ground as a result of the attack, police added. They sustained injuries to their face and leg.
Investigators said a suspect surrendered to police at 52 Division in Toronto on Monday.
A 20-year-old Mississauga man has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with the weekend attack. He was scheduled to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Tuesday.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with relevant information is asked to call Toronto Police at 416-808-3505 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
Prior to the arrest, police had appealed to members of the public for help in tracking down the person responsible for the Oct. 10 assault. They had released both a description and photo of a suspect.
