THE MOJ: B.C. Lions watch intently as CFL teams jockey for playoff position

PLAYOFFS? DON’T TALK ABOUT PLAYOFFS! With all due respect to Jim Mora Sr., yes, we are talking playoffs and they start this weekend for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Calgary Stampeders. Those three teams are jockeying for third place in the West and a crossover berth into the Eastern Division. The Riders and Bombers sit at 8-8 while the Stampeders, who the Lions play this Saturday in Calgary (4 p.m., 730 CKNW; Sher-E- Punjab Radio AM 600) are at 8-9. If the Stamps lose on Saturday, they need the Riders to lose their two remaining games against Montreal and Edmonton to get into the post-season. If the Stamps win and the Riders lose to Montreal this weekend, the Stamps are in. We could go on as there are 32 different playoff scenarios but one thing is almost a certainty, the Lions will be hosting a playoff game on Oct. 31 against one of these three teams. The only way the Lions don’t host the Western Semifinal on Halloween is by losing to Calgary, Winnipeg beating Edmonton this weekend and then the Bombers beating the Lions by 20 points in the season finale.
UNSUNG HERO: The CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Awards process will begin in a few weeks and the Lions will have worthy candidates in just about all categories but there will be players who should be recognized regardless. One of those is right tackle Tyran Walker-Hunt, who was inserted into the starting lineup in Week 7. The right tackle position had been an issue with former CFL Outstanding Offensive Lineman Dejon Allen being a bust to the point where he was released after five games. Josh Donovan then took over before a knee injury knocked him out of the lineup after one game giving Walker-Hunt an opportunity. Walker-Hunt was actually cut by the Lions on July 16 but brought back 11 days later and has been a solid contributor at the right tackle position. At six-foot-six and 310 pounds, Walker-Hunt has always had the size and athletic ability but his technique has now caught up to his athleticism.
NUMBERS AND MORE NUMBERS: Every week CFL stats guru and recent B.C. Football Hall of Fame inductee Steve Daniels produces a smorgasbord for stat nerds. I always look for something that sticks out and this week was no different. Field position has been an issue for the Lions all year long as their starting field position – 33.7 yard line – is the worst in the CFL while their opponents starting at the 40.3 yard line is also a CFL-worst. The Lions are also last in starting drives in their opponent’s end (17) which isn’t too much of a surprise given the aforementioned numbers while Edmonton leads the league in that department with 47 drives starting in opposition territory. What is surprising? The Elks have reached the red zone 65 times while the Lions have done it on 61 occasions.
MORE CINEMATIC GEMS BY LIONS DIGITAL CONTENT TEAM: The latest installment of Arrow Up – the documentary chronicling the Lions 2026 season – has been posted on the team’s YouTube channel and is worth the watch. It’s another great piece of work by Lions Senior Manager of Digital Media Nik Kowalski, whose team continues to put out content that is equivalent to what you would see with NFL Films. The Lions are lucky to have Kowalski for now because if he continues producing work like this, he’ll have organizations knocking on his door. Give it a watch here: https://bclions.com/arrow-up.
