Mississauga’s new $13.9-billion “state-of-the-art” hospital won’t open until 2034, but people can get an up-close look next week at the future of health care in the city.

Expected to be the biggest hospital in Canada when it opens, The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital will rise up 22 storeys on the same site as the current Mississauga Hospital. It will check in at 2.8 million sq. ft. in size and will house within it the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, to be the first such medical facility in Ontario.

Trillium Health Partners, which oversees Mississauga and Credit Valley hospitals in addition to Queensway Health Centre in Etobicoke, just steps east of Mississauga, is hosting two open houses next week to give visitors “a full-scale, real-life preview” of the future hospital.

The Oct. 20 and Oct. 24 open houses are being held at the Trillium HealthWorks Experience Centre, a site just west of Dixie Road that features a full-scale mockup of hospital rooms and other parts of what will comprise Mississauga’s new hospital.

The Oct. 20 open house runs from 5-8 p.m. while the Oct. 24 open house is scheduled from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The Trillium HealthWorks Experience Centre is located at 1225 Dundas St. E.

Virtual town hall to be held in November

Beyond next week, Trillium Health Partners is hosting another public engagement event later in the fall. The community is invited to attend a virtual town hall taking place Nov. 19 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

“Construction is well underway for The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, and we want to keep (the community) informed and involved as we move forward,” hospital officials said this week, adding that over the next 20 years, “no hospital in Ontario will need more services than Trillium Health Partners.”

When completed, The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital will be roughly three times the size of the current hospital, which first opened at the southwest corner of Hurontario Street and The Queensway West in 1958.

$1-billion fundraising campaign

Last week, the Trillium Health Partners Foundation announced the launch of the largest fundraising initiative in its history.

The $1-billion Built for Us campaign will “support the delivery of faster, more specialized care closer to home and a health system built around the people who rely on it,” the foundation said.

Specifically, the campaign will support:

The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, a $13.9-billion “state-of-the-art” health-care centre that will rise up 22 storeys on the same site as the current Mississauga Hospital.
Redevelopment of The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre, which will more than double the number of beds at that facility. “For patients and families, that means greater local access to emergency, medical imaging, rehabilitation and specialized services, expanded care for women and children, and a more connected, proactive health system that supports people at every stage of life,” THP foundation officials said.

Trillium Health Partners Foundation raises funds to support “the highest-priority needs” of Trillium Health Partners.

The foundation said its Built for Us campaign “builds on historic investments” from the Ontario government — which is paying 75 to 85 per cent of the cost of the new hospital — and City of Mississauga, “together with transformational support from donors to advance one of the most significant health-care transformations underway in Canada.”

New hospital will have 950 patient beds

When it opens to patients and the broader community in 2034, The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital will feature, among other things, 950 patient beds (100 per cent private rooms), a new emergency department to be three times the size of the current ER and nine new and 14 enhanced state-of-the-art operating rooms, which will increase surgical capacity and reduce wait times across the region, officials noted.

The City of Mississauga is contributing $390 million to the cost of the new $13.9-billion hospital. Infrastructure Ontario is in charge of the project.

Developer/philanthropist Peter Gilgan, for whom the hospital is named, contribued $105 million to the new health-care centre in 2022. At the time, the donation was the largest-ever financial gift  to a hospital in Canadian history
