As the Parti Québécois prepares to assume power, the question now for premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon is whether his minority government will be able to garner sufficient opposition support to deliver on some of his key promises.

Among these is his pledge to extend the French-language rules of Bill 101 to CEGEPs — a proposal that should raise alarm not only in anglophone and allophone communities, but among francophones too.

For one thing, in a cruel twist, it’s not a big stretch to say PSPP’s plan would deny many fellow francophones the kind of opportunity and privilege he himself enjoyed as a post-secondary student.
