The only rookie on the F1 grid in 2027, Rafael Câmara has notably had to choose his permanent number which will accompany him in Formula 1.
He will be the 34th Brazilian in history to drive a Formula 1 car in a Grand Prix. Following Gabriel Bortoleto ‘s arrival in 2025, Rafael Câmara has officially signed with Haas for 2027 after months of rumors and speculation. Replacing Esteban Ocon and his number 31, Câmara ultimately opted for number 50. Initially, number 5 seemed to be his first choice. However, since that number is already worn by Gabriel Bortoleto, number 50 will belong to Oliver Bearman ‘s teammate.
The first driver to truly choose this permanent number in Formula 1, Rafael Câmara will not, however, be the very first to debut it in a Grand Prix. On two occasions, this number has been worn by none other than… Oliver Bearman, his teammate! After the Briton’s successful stint with Ferrari at the start of the 2024 season in Jeddah, he returned to the F1 grid twice that same year, driving for Haas.
Replacing Kevin Magnussen, who was suspended in Baku, Bearman wore the number 50 on that occasion, having scored the point for 10th place in Azerbaijan. Three Grands Prix later, in São Paulo, Kevin Magnussen was again unable to compete, suffering from an illness before the race. It was then that Oliver Bearman was once again called upon to fill in, this time wearing the famous number 50. A nice, if probably unintentional, nod to Rafael Câmara, who is highly anticipated to be on the F1 grid at the start of the 2027 season.
