Prohibited firearm suppressor intercepted in Mississauga leads to 16 charges against Nova Scotia man

A package intercepted by the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) officers has led to smuggling 16 firearm-related charges against a 25-year-old man from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

The investigation began when CBSA officers at the International Mail Processing Centre in Mississauga discovered a prohibited firearm suppressor in a package destined for Ian Pierre Surette’s residence in Yarmouth. A firearm suppressor is a device designed to reduce the sound of gunfire.

Following the seizure, CBSA investigators, with assistance from the RCMP, executed a search warrant at Surette’s residence on February 25, 2026

During the search, officers seized 13 long guns, four shotguns, two handguns, 17 firearm magazines, a prohibited knife, ammunition and a homemade firearm suppressor, along with other items.

Surette was arrested and later released under conditions prohibiting him from possessing firearms, prohibited weapons or ammunition.

On July 23, 2026, Surette was charged with 16 offences, including smuggling, unsafe storage of firearms, possession of prohibited weapons and importing a prohibited device.

He is scheduled to appear in Yarmouth Provincial Court on October 26, 2026.
