A majority of respondents to a new INSAUGA Canada poll don’t believe Mississauga will ever get a subway, despite billions of dollars being invested in rapid transit in the city.

The poll asked readers: Will Mississauga ever get a subway?

Of the 2,979 votes cast, 57.4 per cent, or 1,710 respondents, said “No, never.”

Another 42.6 per cent, or 1,269 people, said “Yes, it’s only a matter of time.”

Will Mississauga ever get a subway?

The results show a relatively close divide over the long-term future of rapid transit in Mississauga, but the subway skeptics came out ahead by 441 votes.

Mississauga does not currently have a subway line, and there are currently no announced plans to extend Toronto’s subway system into the city.

However, Mississauga is in the middle of one of the biggest transit transformations in its history.

The Hazel McCallion Line, formerly known as the Hurontario LRT, is under construction and will run approximately 18 kilometres between Port Credit GO Station in Mississauga and Brampton Gateway Terminal at Steeles Avenue.

The line will have 19 stops and connect riders with six transit systems and rail connections, including GO Transit, MiWay, Brampton Transit, Züm and the Mississauga Transitway.

Does the recent roller-coaster death make you nervous about riding one?

Metrolinx expects the line to carry approximately 32 million riders annually by 2031. The project’s current baseline cost is approximately $6.03 billion, according to the latest Metrolinx rapid transit project financials.

There are also plans to bring the LRT deeper into downtown Mississauga.

The province has advanced funding for planning activities for a Downtown Mississauga Extension of the Hazel McCallion Line. Metrolinx says the extension is currently in the planning and design stage.

The debate over whether Mississauga will eventually need a subway comes as the city continues its evolution from a largely suburban municipality into a more densely developed urban centre.

Mississauga had a population of 717,961 in the 2021 Census, according to Statistics Canada, with a population density of 2,452.5 people per square kilometre.

The city’s population, combined with continued residential and commercial development, means transportation and rapid transit will remain major issues as Mississauga grows.

While Toronto’s subway network has expanded beyond the city’s boundaries into Vaughan, no subway currently extends west into Mississauga.

For now, Mississauga’s major rapid transit investment is focused on the Hazel McCallion Line and other transit improvements rather than a conventional subway.

Still, the INSAUGA Canada poll shows a significant portion of respondents believe that could eventually change.

More than four in 10 voters believe a Mississauga subway is only a matter of time, while nearly six in 10 think it will never happen.

The poll is an original INSAUGA Canada poll and is not a scientific survey. Results represent the opinions of readers who chose to participate and should not be interpreted as representing the views of all Mississauga residents.
