MALIBU, Calif. – The University of Hawai’i men’s tennis team delivered a solid showing on Day 2 of the ITA Southwest Regional Championship at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. The day was highlighted by Söeren Grandke’s standout run into the Main Draw’s Round of 16.

Grandke, a senior transfer, proved to be the story of the day for UH, capturing back-to-back victories in the main draw. He opened the day by outlasting Arizona’s Glib Sekachov in a hard-fought three-set battle, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, before dominating UC Irvine’s Yashwin Krishnakumar in the Round of 32 with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 performance.

Junior transfer Mats Bredschneijder made his Hawai’i debut on Friday. He started strong in the main draw, cruising past UC Irvine’s Mason Bui in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 in the Round of 64. His run came to a halt in the Round of 32, where he fell to UCLA’s Emon van Loben Sels in a competitive 6-3, 6-4 match. Kent Mueller also competed in the Round of 64, falling to LMU’s Cesar Cruz, 6-1, 6-3.

Five Rainbow Warriors competed in the consolation round, grabbing two straight-set victories, with UH’s Kosuke Nakanishi defeating UC Santa Barbara’s Vincente Freda, 6-2, 6-2, while Simon Knezevic cruised past UC San Diego’s David Adanson, 6-2, 6-2.

In other consolation matches, Hikaru Takahashi fell to UCSB’s Felipe Vazquez (6-2, 6-4), and David Knesl was stopped by San Diego State’s Piotr Seikanowicz (6-1, 6-3). Adriano Dzhenev pushed Cal Poly’s Evan Simon to three sets, taking the second frame before falling 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-0.

On Saturday, Grandke will continue play in the Main Draw, while the doubles competition commences.
