Scheifele gave the Jets a 1-0 lead at 4:23 of the second period, creating a turnover in the Hurricanes zone and beating Kochetkov with a backhand.

“They’re defending Stanley Cup champions for a reason — they stick to their game,” Winnipeg captain Adam Lowry said. “I thought in the first we did a good job advancing pucks, getting pucks behind their ‘D’, recovering pucks on the forecheck, and then getting some pucks to the net. We started to kind of get away from that… They do a good job backtracking. They do a good job of turning those turnovers into zone time, into chances, and that’s what they did.”

Jankowski tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal at 8:19, with a shot from the low slot. He has six goals in nine games this season after he had 11 in 68 games last season.

He has stepped up in the absence of injured forwards Seth Jarvis, Taylor Hall and Jordan Staal.

“It says a lot about the quality of player,” Brind’Amour said. “He’s a guy we can rely on in every situation, and when you have the guys we have out, that’s what we need.”

Iafallo scored at 10:59 for a 2-1 lead. Lowry stole the puck from Kochetkov, who was out of the net to play the puck, and set Iafallo for a tap in.

“There was two (freebies) that you don’t really like,” Brind’Amour said. “There wasn’t much that they did to get those, but then I thought we buckled down and played a real good second half of the game. Going up and down the lineup, everybody was contributing tonight, and that’s what you have to have especially with the guys we have out. So give the guys a lot of credit for the way they stepped up.”

Kotkaniemi tied it 2-2 at 16:50, tipping a Gostisbehere point shot.

“They play just a very consistent game,” Winnipeg forward Kyle Connor said. “They know what they are and they’re on top of you all over the ice… They’re quick to transition. It just seems like they know their reads very well and can read off each other, which adds to the fact that they play so much quicker that way.”
