LETTER: So your dog is friendly? Control it anyway – it’s the law in Surrey

Editor,
Surrey is one of the best communities to own a dog. There are numerous trails and parks within the city to explore.
However, there is a downside and it’s all about the leash. On any given day there are dogs running loose on the trails and in public parks. Owners seem to think that a shout out of “he’s friendly” makes it OK to let their dog run freely.
Just because the dog is friendly with some dogs doesn’t mean it will be with mine. Some owners are nowhere in sight or walking several yards behind and talking on their phone. They don’t even stop to pick up after them! Just another infraction.
There are lots of dog parks for free run activity and socializing. So what is the solution? Signs don’t work, and apparently bylaws are for other people’s dogs as theirs is “friendly.”
The presence of the occasional bylaw officer might be worth a try with at least a warning. Better yet, how about hitting them where it hurts the most and handing out some fines. Money is something we can all understand.
