Peel Public Health vaccination clinics are opening this week as health officials urge residents to protect themselves against flu, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) ahead of the colder months, when respiratory illnesses can spread more easily.

Appointments for people in high-risk and priority groups begin Wednesday, Oct. 21, while vaccines will become available to the general population aged six months and older on Monday, Oct. 26.

Both Peel Public Health clinics are located at 7120 Hurontario St. in Mississauga, offering residents of Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon another option for getting vaccinated this respiratory illness season.

Peel’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Alexa Caturay, said vaccination is an important way for residents to protect themselves and their families as people spend more time indoors.

“As the weather gets colder and we move indoors, respiratory viruses can spread more easily,” Caturay said.

She encouraged residents to get vaccinated and continue taking precautions such as washing their hands, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick.

Peel Public Health says vaccination is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious illness. While vaccines do not eliminate the possibility of infection, they can lower the risk of getting sick and help make illness less severe.

That protection is particularly important for older adults, young children, pregnant people and others who face a higher risk of complications from respiratory infections.

Influenza, COVID-19 and RSV can all cause significant illness, and infections can lead to complications that require medical attention or hospitalization. Staying up to date on recommended vaccines can help reduce those risks and protect vulnerable members of the community.

The vaccines are free for people who live or attend school in Ontario, and an Ontario health card is not required at Peel Public Health clinics.

Residents can book appointments online through Peel Region’s website or by calling 905-799-7700 or toll-free at 1-888-919-7800.

People can also check with their family doctor, walk-in clinic, participating pharmacy or community health centre about vaccine availability. Pharmacies and other providers may have different eligibility requirements and appointment options.

Peel Public Health is encouraging residents to take additional steps to limit the spread of respiratory viruses, including washing their hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes with their elbow or upper sleeve, and staying home when feeling sick.

More information about vaccine eligibility, clinic appointments and respiratory illness prevention is available on the Peel Public Health website.
