An 18-year-old driver was caught by the RCMP Air 1 helicopter in Surrey travelling at a speed of 175 km/h in a 90 km/h zone on Oct. 13 and had his dad’s 2026 Cadillac impounded.
BC Highway Patrol issued a press release on Tuesday (Oct. 20) as well as video of the incident.
Sgt. Michael McLaughlin said the driver, who was from Abbotsford, was spotted by Air 1 at 10 a.m. on Oct. 13 on Highway 1 eastbound near the Brunette overpass in Coquitlam.
After clocking the driver’s speed, Air 1 contacted BC Highway Patrol.
Police pulled over the driver just west of 200th Street in Surrey. McLaughlin said the driver had been busted for excessive speeding in the same car just one month earlier.
The novice driver was issued:
• a ticket for excessive speeding with a fine of $368;
• the cost of a tow and a seven-day impound – which ICBC could choose to increase to 30 days because of his second offence – at the expense of his dad, the registered owner;
• increased high-risk driver premiums for at least three years that push the total cost to $2,500; and
• a review of his licence status as a result of accumulated penalty points, which could result in a suspension.
McLaughlin said police are releasing the video as a public-service message to other drivers.
“Weaving through traffic while more than 80 over the limit is unacceptably dangerous,” he said.
“We want every driver to see this video and understand that we’re using every tool at our disposal, including helicopters a thousand metres above your head, to keep our roads safer.”
