A Toronto sandwich shop that has attracted attention for its oversized Italian creations and freshly baked bread has opened a new location in Mississauga, bringing its popular menu to one of the city’s busiest shopping centres.

Vero Italian Sandwich Co. has officially opened at Square One Shopping Centre, offering sandwiches built with imported Italian ingredients, specialty cheeses, cured meats and bread made through a lengthy fermentation process.

The shop is located inside the mall’s food court.

The business was founded around the vision of Chef Daniele Gagliotta, a world-champion pizza maker from Naples, Italy, who brought his expertise in dough-making to the sandwich business.

Rather than using standard sandwich bread, Vero builds its creations on schiacciata, a traditional Italian flatbread similar to focaccia. The dough undergoes a 72-hour cold-fermentation process, which the company says helps produce a crisp exterior and light, airy interior.

The bread is made using flour imported from Italy, while the sandwiches feature a variety of Italian deli meats, cheeses, spreads and fresh toppings. The preparation process is also part of the experience, with meats and cheeses sliced to order.

Vero’s arrival in Mississauga marks another step in the brand’s expansion beyond its original Toronto location on Queen Street West. The company has also opened a location at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, making the Square One shop its third location.

The menu features several signature sandwiches, including the Don Angelo, which combines prosciutto, burrata, Parmigiano cheese, tomato, balsamic glaze and arugula.

Another popular option is La Mortazza, which pairs mortadella with creamy stracciatella cheese, pistachio crema and arugula. The combination of savoury cured meat and rich pistachio spread has helped make the sandwich a standout on social media.

For those who prefer something spicy, the Il Diavolo features Calabrese soppressata, ‘nduja crema, peperonata and fresh mozzarella.

The God-Feather offers a different combination, with roast turkey, smoked provolone, caramelized onions, cacio e pepe crema and greens. A version made with halal turkey is also available.

Other choices include the Gabagool, featuring capicola, mortadella, fresh mozzarella, pickled vegetables, tomato and arugula, as well as the Smoke & Dolce, which combines smoked ham, provolone, stracciatella cheese, fig jam and arugula.

Vegetarians can opt for the Giuseppe, which features peperonata, fresh mozzarella, basil pesto, artichoke crema, tomato and greens. The Fungo Cotto, meanwhile, combines cooked ham, marinated mushrooms, pecorino cream and truffle crema.

The shop also offers desserts, including freshly made tiramisu in classic, pistachio and Biscoff flavours.

Vero has built a following online, where videos and photographs of its generously filled sandwiches have helped introduce the brand to customers beyond its original Toronto neighbourhood.

The opening at Square One gives Mississauga residents an opportunity to try the sandwiches without travelling downtown Toronto or visiting the Newmarket location.

Vero Italian Sandwich Co. is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The shop’s website, including its menu and online ordering options, can be found at verosandwich.ca.
