How to check municipal election results

“Election results entered on election night are unofficial,” AMO explains on its website. “Election results are declared official by the clerk as soon as possible after voting day.”

Olivia Chow has been re-elected as Toronto’s mayor.

“With about a third of polls reporting, Olivia Chow had taken a commanding lead over Brad Bradford in the race for mayor,” according to the Toronto Star.

The City of Toronto had a whopping 53 candidates running for mayor, including incumbent Olivia Chow and front-running challenger Brad Bradford, who has represented Ward 19 Beaches — East York on Toronto City Council since 2018.

Adding to the potential confusion, another candidate named Braeden Chow appeared on the ballot next to the name of the current mayor.

Polls had suggested Bradford was gaining ground on Olivia Chow, after rival Chris Alexander dropped out of the race. A Mainstreet Research poll cited by CBC News found the difference between Chow and Bradford has narrowed among decided and leaning voters, with Chow leading the race by 2.5 points.

Incumbent Andrea Horwath won’t get a second term as mayor in Hamilton, losing to challenger Keanin Loomis, who secured 61,040 votes, according to unofficial results. Trailing Loomis was Rob Cooper, with 46,573 votes with Horwath coming in a distant third with 21,223.

In the 2022 municipal election, Horwath, the former Ontario NDP leader, narrowly defeated Loomis by 1,663 votes or just over 1 per cent of the total votes cast.

During her first term as mayor in 2024, Horwath drew scrutiny for using her strong-mayor powers to advance an affordable housing project on a piece of city-owned land, despite opposition from local councillors and residents.

Horwath argued the need for housing outweighed those concerns after the initial proposal stalled on a tie vote.
