The quantum computing startup founded by former Australian of the Year Michelle Simmons has scored a seven-figure Department of Defence contract as it looks to commercialise eight years of research and development.

Silicon Quantum Computing will ship its Watermelon units under the contract to Defence via its emerging technology accelerator. The Watermelon units combine quantum and standard processors to speed up AI development.

“It’s vital for leading quantum computing companies to become commercial organisations alongside being scientific leaders,” SQC founder Michelle Simmons said.

“Our customers are some of the biggest R&D spenders in the world. Learning how to win contracts, onboard organisations and deliver value is part of the journey of becoming a big enterprise ourselves.”
