Police watchdog investigators have charged an Ontario Provincial Police officer with assault following an arrest north of Brampton late last year.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says the incident happened on Dec. 26, 2025, at a residence in Caledon East. But it wasn’t reported to the SIU until Feb. 4, the same day the investigators were notified by the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency.

The SIU says OPP officers were called for a disturbance outside the home, and a male suspect was arrested for uttering threats.

But investigators say there was “an interaction” with officers while the man was being handcuffed “that resulted in the man suffering a serious injury.”

An investigation has led the SIU to charge an OPP officer.

The SIU says Const. Daniel Kooy has been charged with assault causing bodily harm.

A more than two-year veteran with the OPP, Kooy joined the Caledon detachment from another service, according to a video posted in 2024 where he appears with OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

He made approximately $148,818 in 2025, according to the Ontario sunshine list.

Friday’s announcement is the second in as many days where charges were laid against an Ontario police officer.

On Thursday, the SIU announced it charged a Halton police officer following a crash while chasing a stolen Hummer over a year ago in Mississauga.

The crash happened on March 12, 2025, around 8:30 a.m. at Winston Churchill Boulevard and Lakeshore Road East, on the border of Mississauga and Oakville, when the driver of a stolen Hummer was involved in a collision with a diesel fuel truck tractor-trailer.

The SIU is Ontario’s police watchdog agency that investigates police incidents in Ontario involving death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm, or allegations of sexual assault.
