Halloween in Surrey, Saturday night.

What could go wrong?

Festivities will involve fireworks, no doubt, even though Surrey bans their sale, purchase, possession and use without a permit from Fire Services.

Safe to say, Roman Candles and other fireworks will be seen and heard during Diwali celebrations Nov. 8, too, despite warnings of fines of up to $50,000 for illegal use or possession of fireworks in Surrey.

Complaints should be directed to City of Surrey Bylaws, 604-591-4370 (do not call 911 unless it’s an emergency).

Tonight and next week, fireworks-busting bylaw enforcement officers will be deployed in high-activity areas across Surrey, working in collaboration with police. “Officers will respond to reports, gather evidence, issue tickets and engage police as needed,” says a post on surrey.ca.

Fireworks can lead to fires, serious injuries and distress for both humans and pets, cautions Surrey bylaws officer Grewal in a video posted to Surrey’s Facebook page.
