Churchyard tours have shed light on tales of witches, tragedy, and Halloween traditions.

The event, held at Brampton Old Church and organised by the Brampton Preservation Trust, explored the darker side of the town’s past through talks and guided walks.

Dr Maks Loth-Hill spoke about the origins and customs of Halloween, while David Moorat recounted the story of Lizzie Baty, known as the Brampton Witch.

Brittany Warren, a historian and genealogist from Solving Your Mysteries, led tours of the churchyard, sharing stories uncovered from historical records and old newspaper reports.

Her tours revealed gruesome, unusual and tragic events connected to the church and its burial ground.

The Brampton Preservation Trust, a charity formed in 1981, has cared for Brampton Old Church since 1988.

Built on the site of a former Roman fort, the church is an important part of the area’s heritage.

The event gave the Trust a chance to share that history differently and raise awareness of its work.

Run by volunteers, the Trust relies on local support to preserve the church for future generations.
