A two-year-old boy was killed in a collision at a shopping centre in northeast Calgary late Sunday afternoon.
The child was struck by a taxi in the parking lot near the Winner’s in the 2500 block of 36th Street N.E., after he ran into the parking lot thoroughfare.
The driver of the taxi took the victim and family to the nearby Peter Lougheed hospital, police said.
Traffic Unit Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward said the driver “made a decision, which I think was the right decision with the Peter Lougheed right next door. Had it been any other hospital, then obviously we would’ve waited for an ambulance to come.”
The child later died from his injuries.
Woodward said police are still in the early stages of investigating, but they believe the child “slipped the hand of his father” and ran out into a road that separates two parking lots.
Woodward said the driver has been cooperative with the investigation.
10 pedestrian deaths this year: police
This is the second pedestrian fatality in the last week. A man was struck and killed in Martindale in the city’s northeast on Oct. 26. Another pedestrian collision the next day prompted warnings from police and a city councillor for drivers and pedestrians to pay attention as daylight hours dwindle.
In September, a women was struck and killed by a bus in the southwest community of Somerset.
According to police, there have been 27 fatal collisions in the city this year resulting in 33 deaths, 10 of which were pedestrians.
Safety a concern on Alberta roads
A June report to city council showed road safety in Calgary was trending in the wrong direction and RCMP said in September that 2026 was on track to be the deadliest year on Alberta roads.
This weekend saw another two fatal accidents on the province’s highways.
A teenager was killed and two other people seriously injured in a crash near the town of Bassano. A separate rollover incident northwest of Calgary near the town of Cremona killed two and left another person in critical condition.
