Ben Turner (Ineos Grenadiers) took a surprise sprint victory against the likes of Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) on stage 4 of the Vuelta a España.

Turner was piloted expertly into the finale by Michał Kwiatkowski and then the 26-year-old Brit tucked in behind Philipsen’s lead-out, which took over in the final few hundred meters. Turner picked his moment well to unleash his sprint within sight of the line, taking advantage of Philipsen being tucked just inside teammate Edward Planckaert’s rear wheel and having to negotiate an onrushing Ethan Vernon (Israel-Premier Tech) who was also contesting the finish.

Turner, a last-minute addition to the Ineos Vuelta roster, held them all off, roaring in celebration across the line. Philipsen finished second just ahead of his lead-out man Planckaert, with Vernon in fourth.

Behind the riders battling for the stage win, David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) finished far enough enough of overnight leader Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) to take control of the red jersey on count back.

How it happenedTuesday’s stage 4 was the final stage of this Vuelta to start in Italy, leaving Susa in the morning and then heading over the border into France. The peloton would tackle three categorized climbs in the first half of the stage, which helped inspire a group of five riders to get clear and form the day’s break, even though the flat second half of the stage made a sprint finish the likeliest outcome.
