ST. LOUIS, Mo. — A new season brings in a sense of optimism for what the year will hold. This is no different for the Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team as they begin their second year under head coach Andrew Bordelon.

The Bears will look to improve on their 8-5-3 record overall and 2-3-2 in their UAA contests from last season. WashU ended on a high note with a 2-1 on the road against Chicago.

For the second year in a row, the Bears will start things off against Millikin on Friday, August 29 on the road at 4 p.m. They wrap up opening weekend on Sunday, Aug. 31 at Westminster at 5 p.m.

WashU will open its home schedule on Friday, Sept. 5 when Elmhurst comes to Francis Olympic Field for a 5:30 p.m. contest. The game will also be the team’s International Student contest. The Bears will wrap up the weekend by hitting the road and heading to Illinois College on Sunday, Sept. 7 to visit the Big Blue at 1:30 p.m.

The following weekend WashU will have just one contest, as they will make the trip south to Memphis for a road matchup with Rhodes on Friday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m.

The Bears then return home for a pair of games at Francis Olympic Field beginning with a visit from North Park on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. The following Saturday, Sept. 20, WashU will host Wheaton at 1 p.m. Prior to kickoff, the Bears will honor their five seniors, Nathan Szpak, Ethan Semelsberger, Zach Susee, Tyler Allred, and Owen Deming with a special recognition for their years of dedication to the program.

The next week, WashU returns to the road, but does not travel far as they pay a visit to Principia on Tuesday, Sept. 23 with a 5:30 p.m. contest. On Saturday, Sept. 27 the Bears will travel to cross-city opponent Webster for a 6 p.m. contest at WWT Soccer Park.

One final non-conference matchup for WashU will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 30 when they host Greenville in a return contest from a season ago at 7 p.m.

UAA conference action gets underway on Saturday, Oct. 4 when the Bears host Brandeis as part of Youth and Campers Day at Francis Olympic Field. Kick off is scheduled for 11 a.m.

A road contest at Case Western Reserve awaits on Saturday, Oct. 11 when the Bears travel to Cleveland for a 10 a.m. ET contest. With no midweek contests remaining, WashU will take on Carnegie Mellon on Sunday, Oct. 19 when the Tartans pay a visit to St. Louis for an 11 a.m. kickoff.

The final away weekend of the season starts off on Friday, Oct. 24 when the Bears visit Rochester in a 5 p.m. ET contest before traveling down to Atlanta on Sunday, Oct. 26 for a contest with the defending UAA champion Emory Eagles at 11 a.m. ET.

WashU will host its annual The Hidden Opponent contest on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. when they take on NYU. The Bears wrap up the regular season against Chicago on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m.

All four players who earned All-UAA honors last season are back including junior Quentin Gomez, who was named UAA Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team. He was joined by Susee and Szpak and junior Carter Sasser.

The Bears return 89% (32 of 36) of their goals scored as well as 72% of their assists from a year ago.

In addition to the five seniors, this year’s squad features 10 juniors, with Gomez and Sasser being joined by Nik Avillo, Liam Oiknine, Colin Link, James Whitehurst, Owen Ross, Ethan Wirtschafter, Cal L’Hommedieu, and Noah Cooney.

Ross and L’Hommedieu combined for 1125:00 minutes in goal for the Bears last season and had a combined 6-4-2 record and 29 combined saves. Wirtschafter was second on the team a year ago in both goals (6) and points (14). In total the juniors finished the 2024 season with 12 goals and six assists.

Four sophomores return to the Bears this season with Jamie Lee, Luca Violone, Yash Kshirsagar, and Quentin Wallace.

The first-year class for WashU features two goalies, Ethan Talapatra and Anthony Tarantelli in addition to Daniel Kochen, Wole Adeoye, Hale Fernandez, Miles Newman, Will Atticks, Nick Hammond, Sebastian Valdes, Roshan Greene, Jack Hayeems, Immanuel Goveas, Gamble Lehman-Karp, and Casper Leary.
