Local group is also inviting volunteers to participate in key environmental initiative at Tudhope Park in September

NEWS RELEASE

SUSTAINABLE ORILLIA

************************************

It’s time to plant trees.

Area tree lovers will be planting trees around Orillia in September.

Sustainable Orillia is seeking tree enthusiasts on Saturday, Sept. 20 to plant new native trees in Tudhope Park and on their own properties. Volunteers are also welcome on Saturday, Sept. 13 to join a team at Tudhope Park removing invasive Buckthorn trees to make space for the native tree planting event on Saturday, Sept. 20.

These native trees are well-suited for local conditions and will help create a more sustainable natural environment for visitors to Tudhope Park to enjoy.

Sign up for the Buckthorn pull and tree planting project (either or both days) at: https://forms.gle/s2ZhGRWkRK6LQP7W9  Once registered, volunteers will be contacted with details (e.g. timing, clothing, what to bring, etc). Tools and lunch will be provided.

Also on Saturday, Sept. 20, Sustainable Orillia will be distributing trees at no charge (one per person) to Orillia area residents to plant on their own properties. Trees can be requested from among the species below.

All are native to Ontario:

Red Maple (Acer rubrum)
Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera)
Red Oak (Quercus rubra)
Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis)
White Pine (Pinus strobus)
White Meadowsweet (Spirea alba)
Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea)

All tree saplings will be provided in a one-gallon pot and available for pick-up only during 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Tudhope Park in Orillia. The pick-up location will be behind the Barnfield Point Recreation Centre (follow driveway around side of building).

Trees must be requested in advance via https://forms.gle/35jfAhdoc7392SBk6

Additional trees are available by request for a minimum donation of $10 each.

This project is in partnership with Mariposa Folk Festival and supported by Trees Canada and the LCBO.
