Tbh, I’m still recovering from the shocking end of episode 7—but the latest episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty, “Last Kiss,” is now here to rip my heart open all over again. To recap: Before her death, Susannah wrote letters for Jeremiah and Belly (as well as Conrad!) to read on their respective wedding days, and Conrad’s letter ends up starting some maaajor drama. But what exactly did Susannah’s letter to Conrad say? Let’s discuss. Major spoilers ahead, obviously.
In the episode, Jeremiah goes missing the morning of his wedding, and Conrad is the one to finally find him. The two fight (because of the Belly of it all) and afterward, Conrad gives Jeremiah a letter written to him from Susannah…except the letter inside the envelope is actually intended for Conrad. (Callback to season 2, when Susannah was writing letters in bed and Laurel accidentally knocked over her tray, mixing them up!)
Viewers only get a glimpse at the letter when Jeremiah reads it, but when he hands it back to Conrad, fans are given a better look. If you don’t feel like pausing and deciphering Susannah’s handwriting, here’s what the full note says:
Dear Conrad,
I can hardly believe my little bug is getting married today! I am just bursting at the thought that my beautiful boy has found the person he wants to spend the rest of his life with.
I only ever got to see you in love once, and for that I will always, always be grateful. Not just that I got to see you in love but I got to see you be loved. Oh, the way she looked at you—it was like you were the only boy in the world. As a mother, there is no greater gift to see her child be so dearly loved by another person. Today, if there is even a fraction of the love I saw then, I am more than happy, I am overjoyed.
Don’t be afraid to tell her every day how very much she means to you. Cook for her, be a good listener, don’t try to win every argument. Jewelry is always welcome. Pay attention to if she wears gold or silver. If she is not a jewelry girl, then chocolate.
Loving you always and forever,
Mom
The letter doesn’t explicitly name Belly…but based on both of their reactions, Jeremiah and Conrad know exactly who Susannah is alluding to when she references to Conrad’s first love. *sobs*
Unfortunately, the contents of Susannah’s letters to Belly and Jeremiah aren’t revealed during the episode—as Belly doesn’t get a chance to read hers before Laurel takes it and Jeremiah’s letter is presumably somewhere in Conrad’s possession—but here’s hoping we find out sometime during the last three (!!) episodes of season 3.
