Jackie’s love triangle came to a roaring head in the season 2 finale of My Life with the Walter Boys.

After rekindling things with Alex (Ashby Gentry), Jackie began a series of clandestine hookups with the younger of her two Walter brother love interests, but Cole (Noah LaLonde) found out about it, and called Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) out for stringing him along all the while.

As things finally got out in the open between Jackie and Cole — who told her he loved her, and she said it back — Alex was on the porch behind them, listening to everything. Before the trio could settle the love triangle, Will (Johnny Link) came speeding around the corner, an ambulance in his wake, with the news that something had happened to their dad (Marc Blucas).

From LaLonde’s perspective, that intense conversation between Jackie and Cole is a product of months of emotions finally breaking the surface.

“I think, when he finds out about what she’s been doing with Alex, I think it is like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa,'” the actor, 27, tells PEOPLE of how his character is feeling in the finale. “I thought maybe this was happening because we were all waiting — we were waiting for things to progress and be right,”

While Cole was under the impression that he and Jackie were waiting for the “right time” to come back together, she’s “already moved on to something” else — or, in this case, someone.

The finale conversation is, in his words, “the pressure cooker exploding” following weeks of Cole’s waiting. “It’s like, this can only go on for so long.”

After a season’s worth of smaller moments between Cole and Jackie, LaLonde was excited to finally see them tackle their true feelings.

“I think the last scene is the frustration of a young man’s loving heart,” LaLonde continues.

“I was really excited when we got that scene in the script because there’s a lot of smaller moments, and quicker moments, and moments that kind of start to dig past the surface, but get buttoned up pretty quick — mostly by Jackie.”

“But I think that scene verbalizes everything that’s been going on the entire show — both seasons.” he says. “And it’s the first time you really get that type of deep conversation between the two of them.”

Noah LaLonde as Cole and Nikki Rodriguez as Jackie in ‘My Life with the Walter Boys’ season 2.He was admittedly surprised by the route that Cole and Jackie’s relationship took this season after that steamy barn kiss in the season 1 finale.

“I was definitely surprised doing the first few episodes, and thinking to myself, ‘Okay. Where are we together here?'” he recalls of his reaction to the season 2 arc.

“The thing that I think is really interesting about their relationship this year is, the same distance that Jackie creates with Cole, the ability to have that discipline is, I think, of the same vein of why Cole feels so attracted to her.”

“What I really like about the season is that, although they don’t have as many overtly romantic moments, I think you see the deep love shine through in the scenes where they’re there for each other in ways that is really building on their relationship, the deep relationship that they’ve built,” he adds.

“If you’re looking for another Episode 10 barn kiss scene, you may be a little bit worried. But if you’re looking for a few longing gazes, and a few unspoken understandings, and real assessments of who these people are, I think they’re doing that ad nauseam this season.”
