Christina Aguilera shares a son with her ex-husband Jordan Bratman and a daughter with her fiancé Matt Rutler.

Max was born on January 12, 2008.

Summer arrived on August 16, 2014.

Christina Aguilera‘s children Max and Summer are “the center of [her] universe.” The “Candyman” singer shares her son with her ex-husband Jordan Bratman and her daughter with her fiancé Matt Rutler. She became a mom for the first time with the birth of Max in 2008 and later opened up about raising both kids in a 2014 interview with People.

“It’s definitely not easy juggling work and motherhood, as being a parent is a full-time job within itself,” she said, per the Los Angeles Times. “You just have to make it work for you. My life has so many different moving parts, but my kids are the center focal piece, and everything else shifts around them.”

Xtina and Bratman were married from 2005-2011; she has been engaged to her current fiancé Rutler since 2014. The “Lady Marmalade” singer has since spoken positively about co-parenting with her ex-husband.

“It’s so great that my son has both of us, both homes. What’s most important whenever a marriage doesn’t work is that the kids are taken care of emotionally, their needs are met, and you try not to bring them into the heaviness of it,” Aguilera once told The Sunday Times. “I think we’ve done a great job of that, but it really takes a lot of communication and putting your kids first, beyond your own needs.”

As for her work-life balance? The singer took a 10-year hiatus from touring to focus on raising Max and Summer. Likewise, Aguilera also told People that she accepted a coaching position in 2011 on NBC’s The Voice because she “wanted to have a stable, one-place, rooted environment for [her] kids.”

“It’s definitely not easy. I will openly say that,” she told People in 2019. “The key is truly making sure that they always feel safe and always feel connected.”

Ahead, here’s everything you should know about Christina Aguilera’s two children, Max and Summer, who are the central focus of her blended family.

Aguilera and Bratman’s son Max was born on January 12, 2008 in Los Angeles. His middle name was reportedly chosen because it means “my joy” or “my song” in Hebrew (Bratman is Jewish). “Christina and Jordan are proud to announce the birth of their son Max Liron Bratman,” a rep for the couple told People at the time. “He is a beautiful, healthy baby boy! Mom is resting and doing well!”

The newly minted parents called it quits two years later, with Aguilera filing for divorce. “Things were so unhealthy and unhappy for both Jordan and me, I knew I had to end it,” she told People. “When you’re unhappy in your marriage, your children are the ones who suffer. That’s the last thing I wanted for my son.”

Following their divorce, Aguilera told The Sunday Times her and Bratman have co-parented “really well together.” Max, for his part, is apparently taking after his mom in the musical talent department. The “Fighter” singer revealed in 2018 that her son has an “incredible voice.”

“Summer and I stick to our Disney songs together, BUT, my son Max actually has an incredible voice—he doesn’t showcase it a lot—but I caught him singing Maria the other day, and he was pitch perfect,” she tweeted.

Xtina has also described her only son as having “the biggest heart and caring nature” in a since-deleted Instagram birthday tribute, per People. “You just have a special way of making the room light up, commanding attention & bringing new ideas and laughter to any conversation or situation you’re in,” the proud mom wrote.

Aguilera and Rutler coupled up in 2010 amid her divorce from Bratman. They got engaged in 2014 and welcomed their daughter Summer on August 16 of that same year. “So proud to welcome our beautiful daughter Summer Rain Rutler into the world,” the mom-of-two wrote on X at the time.

Soon after her arrival, the new parents sat down for an interview with People to talk all things parenting. “I never want her to feel that she need to change herself or her body to fit a stereotype. She’s perfection just how she is,” Aguilera told the publication.

She continued, “Most important: I want her to be surrounded by love and grow up feeling safe. That’s something I didn’t have…and something I have been very vocal about providing for my children.”

The “Genie In a Bottle” singer also explained the meaning behind her daughter’s name:  “Summer is a time of spreading warmth and light,” she said, per Hello! Magazine. “While rain washes away [it] replenishes and brings new life to allow growth and new beginnings.”

In 2018, Summer made her musical debut on her Xtina’s album Liberation. The proud mom later revealed the cameo in an interview with People. “My daughter’s laughter actually begins the intro of the record,” she said. “Being a mother is so important to me.”

That same year, the four-year-old joined her mom on stage during the St. Louis stop of her Liberation Tour. Aguilera shared a video of the duo under the spotlight on Instagram. “Summer begs me to come out every night onstage! And then gets shy…but loves it…she’s taking it all in early…” she wrote.

The Burlesque actress later described her daughter as a “very interesting one” who is “no fuss” in an interview with People. “She just doesn’t want to be uncomfortable,” Aguilera added. “She likes to keep it cozy, and some of my wardrobe from the past years is not cozy. It’s just for show!”

Despite Summer’s commitment to cozy vibes, however, the budding performer is not opposed to raiding her mom’s closet along with her big brother Max.

“It’s fun to see how they wear things in different ways than I do, and reinterpret my fashion choices in ways that make it their own,” Xtina once told People. “They both have good personal style and know exactly who they are. I’ve always raised them to express their uniqueness.”
