The Burnaby RCMP says it had a busy Saturday afternoon dealing with two separate incidents along Highway 1.

Just before 5:30 p.m., officers were called to a three-car crash just before the Willingdon Avenue offramp.

“One of the drivers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital,” Cpl. Mike Kalanj told CityNews.

“This vehicle was towed. The other two drivers were uninjured and able to drive away from the collision.”

An hour later, officers received reports of a man driving on the shoulder while drinking from a bottle of vodka in the same stretch of the highway.

“This incident occurred westbound on Highway 1 approaching the three-vehicle collision that occurred near the Willingdon Avenue offramp,” Kalanj said.

“Police were able to attend the area quickly and locate the vehicle. The driver was arrested for impaired driving, and his vehicle was towed.”

Kalanj says Lower Mainland roadways are busier than normal over the long weekend, and drivers need to be more responsible.

“This blatant disregard for public safety is unthinkable,” he said.

“Please make sound decisions before getting behind the wheel.”
