The Douglas High School girls tennis team opened their season with a hard-fought 10–9 victory over rival Carson in a heated afternoon match that came down to a tiebreaker, August 21.
On the singles courts, Kendall Cole, Jasmine Shoemaker, and Prairie Jackson battled for the Tigers.
In doubles play, the teams of Anna Patmont and Naomi Mackenzie, Abby Malone and Addy Lester, and Kinsey Briscoe and Emery Christensen rounded out the lineup.
Despite the heat, the Tigers’ doubles squads stayed cool under pressure, sweeping all three sets.
Patmont and Mackenzie set the tone early, serving with confidence and closing rallies with strong net play.
Malone and Lester kept their opponents on the defensive, while Briscoe and Christensen finished with crisp volleys and steady groundstrokes.
“How proud I am of the girls,” said Douglas head coach Nikki Andrews. “They kept fighting despite the heat and the lengthy sets.”
Carson’s strength showed in singles play, where Shoemaker and Jackson fell in straight sets.
Douglas’ ace Kendall Cole, the Tigers’ No. 2 singles player, refused to fold. After dropping her opening set, Cole dug deep in the tiebreak, mixing in sharp cross-court winners and clutch first serves to secure a comeback victory.
At the end of regulation, the overall match was deadlocked at 9–9, forcing the outcome into tie-break sets. Cole’s singles win, paired with the three doubles victories, sealed the Tigers’ 10–9 triumph.
