With Monday’s loss to the Minnesota Lynx, the Dallas Wings hold the worst combined two-season record in the league, giving them the best draft odds.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Could lightning strike three times in Dallas?
After winning the No. 1 pick in the NBA and WNBA draft lotteries last year, resulting in Cooper Flagg and Paige Bueckers coming to Dallas, the Wings could run it back. With Monday’s loss to the Minnesota Lynx, the Wings have secured the worst combined record over the last two seasons, thus giving them the best odds in next year’s draft lottery.
Heading into December’s lottery, Dallas has a 44.2% chance to secure the top pick in the draft. The team is also guaranteed to select in the top three. The team with the next highest odds, likely the Chicago Sky, will have a 27.6% chance at No. 1.
The Wings’ position gives them a chance to select one of the best seniors in the 2026 class. So who could Dallas pick?
UCLA center Lauren Betts, who averaged 20.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game for the Bruins, is at the top of most draft boards and is arguably the obvious pick for Dallas. The Wings have a guard-heavy roster and are in desperate need of size.
If they win the No. 1 pick, the Wings would also get the chance to select Bueckers’ championship-winning teammate and girlfriend, Azzi Fudd. Fudd averaged 13.6 points with the Huskies last season, playing alongside Bueckers. She was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player for her performance during UConn’s championship campaign.
Other top talent in the draft includes TCU’s Olivia Miles, South Carolina’s Ta’Niya Latson and LSU’s Flau’jae Johnson.
Dallas has been dealing with an onslaught of injuries this season and will miss the playoffs for the fifth time in the 10 seasons since they moved to North Texas. But this offseason could change everything.Â
In addition to the draft, the WNBA is also expanding from 13 to 15 teams this offseason with the addition of the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire. That means the league will undergo another expansion draft, vastly altering how rosters will look heading into the 2026 season. The details of the expansion draft have not yet been announced, but it could present an opportunity for the Wings to revamp after a disappointing 2025 campaign.
