Next week, cyclists from across the United States and Canada will be making their way through the West Kootenay.

With 280 miles/450 kilometres of breathtaking scenery and vibrant communities, the International Selkirk Loop is a favourite destination for cyclists seeking a unique six-day cycling adventure.

Now in its seventeenth year, this annual Rotary Club-supported event takes riders on roads encircling the Selkirk Mountains of Washington, Canada, and Idaho — hence the name WaCanId. Rotary Clubs provide vital support throughout the ride, assisting cyclists with everything from snack and lunch stops to luggage handling.

“The Rotary clubs around the Loop are experienced in catering to the riders and making this one-of-a-kind event possible,” said Donna Molvik, executive director of the International Selkirk Loop. “We hear from riders year after year that this ride provides the best support and scenery they’ve experienced.”

The WaCanId Ride is a partnership between the International Selkirk Loop and Rotary Clubs of District 5080 along the route. Participating clubs include Sandpoint Rotary, Rotary Club of Ponderay Centennial, Bonners Ferry Rotary, Newport Priest River Rotary, Colville Rotary, Kettle Falls Rotary, Rossland Rotary, Castlegar Sunrise Rotary, and Nelson Daybreak Rotary.

Together, they work to raise funds and support local economies through tourism promotion. Funds raised by the event support each club’s community service projects.

Community members are encouraged to watch for the group as they traverse the Loop and a couple of Super Side Trips from September 8–13.
