Back to School – Supporting Your Child Through the Transition
As children return to school, many feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. For some, especially those who are more sensitive or have had difficult experiences, this transition can be especially challenging. Your support as a parent or caregiver plays a vital role in helping them feel safe, confident, and ready to thrive.
How You Can Support Your Child
Research shows that children benefit most when parents are actively involved and emotionally supportive. Here are some helpful strategies:
Create Predictable Routines: Consistent sleep, meal, and homework schedules help reduce stress and build a sense of security.
Talk About Feelings: Encourage open conversations. Let your child know it’s okay to feel nervous and that you’re there to help.
Familiarize Them with School: If possible, visit the school, meet the teacher, and walk through their daily routine.
Stay Calm and Positive: Children take emotional cues from adults. Your calm confidence can help ease their worries.
Support Social Connections: Help your child reconnect with friends or join group activities to build a sense of belonging.
Signs of Anxiety to Watch For
During the first week, keep an eye out for signs that your child may be struggling:
Frequent headaches or stomachaches
Difficulty sleeping or nightmares
Avoiding school or expressing fear about going
Mood swings, irritability, or withdrawal
Changes in appetite or academic performance
If these signs persist, you’re not alone, and help is available.
