The City of Calgary is now accepting submissions for the W.O. Mitchell Book Prize, honoring the legacy of renowned Calgary writer and broadcaster.
W.O. Mitchell is well known for his novel “Who Has Seen the Wind,” which portrays Prairie life through the eyes of a child.
Submissions are open now until December 1, 2025. To be eligible, books must be published between January 1 and December 1, 2025, and authors must have resided in Calgary for at least 2 years before December 31, 2025. Categories include fiction, poetry, non-fiction, children’s literature, and drama.
Entries will be evaluated by an independent jury from the Writers’ Guild of Alberta, and shortlisted authors can present their work at a public reading.
To date, 29 writers have received this accolade, with the winner to receive a $5,000 cash prize at the Calgary Awards in June 2026.
