The Cut, the psychological thriller starring Caitríona Balfe and Orlando Bloom, is finally available to watch in the UK.

The film sees Bloom portray a boxer who comes out of retirement in search of a championship title, with the character soon undergoing a rigorous weight loss program at the behest of his ruthless coach, Boz (John Turturro).

Needing to shed over 25lbs in just six days, the boxer is put through his paces as he yearns to make the weight, though the unconventional and often extreme methods to achieve this draw the eye of his wife, Caitlin (Balfe).

After having its world premiere at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, the highly-anticipated sports thriller is finally available in the UK, with the film now in cinemas.

Written by Justin Bull and directed by Sean Ellis, The Cut has garnered a positive response from critics thus far, with its approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes currently standing at a respectable 79% from 28 reviews.

“Bloom plays his role with a feral commitment, and while Turturro has portrayed several villains in his career, here his refusal to ingratiate even slightly yields a genuinely frightening characterisation,” noted The New York Times.

“Loaded with metaphor, the script can be blunt, but director Sean Ellis keeps the focus unflinching,” opined The Financial Times, while The Playlist was also positive as they called it “compelling”.

“The film tries several things at once, including a flashback structure that doesn’t fully connect, but its impact ultimately comes down to Orlando Bloom‘s visceral, transformative performance as an unnamed Irish brawler,” wrote Variety.

The Guardian was less receptive, however, writing: “The more British director Sean Ellis prods and provokes, the hokier it all gets, a film about cutting weight that could have benefited from a leaner edit.”

While Balfe can now be seen in this sports thriller, the Outlander star recently landed a role in a British period drama, with the actor set to portray Mrs Dashwood in the latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.

The Cut is in cinemas now.
