Get ready for a knockout performance. Sydney Sweeney, best known for her work on ‘Euphoria’, steps into the ring in ‘Christy’, a sports drama about the life of boxing legend Christy Martin. The film, ready to hit theaters on November 7, is Black Bear’s first release under its new distribution label.

With the release, the movie promises to make waves this awards season.

Directed by David Michôd, the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner behind ‘Animal Kingdom’, ‘Christy’ tells the story of Martin, the trailblazing WBC female super welterweight champion who became a household name in boxing.

Sydney Sweeney has received praises for her “chameleonic” transformation into the fighter Christy Martin. And, she brings in the depth and grit to the role. With the film, she aims to capture both Christy’s fierce energy in the ring and her struggles beyond it.

The movie charts Christy’s rise under the guidance of her trainer and husband, Jim Martin. Ben Foster plays this character. The boxer goes on to dominate opponents in the ring, but her real battles take place off it. This includes how she navigates conflicts within the family, her personal identity, and a relationship that turns life-altering.

The supporting cast adds further weight to the story. Merritt Wever plays Joyce Salters, while Katy O’Brian steps into the role of Lisa Holewyne. Ethan Embry and Jess Gabor appear as John Salters and Sherry Lusk, Christy’s high school girlfriend, respectively.

Boxing legend Don King is portrayed by Chad L. Coleman, and Tony Cavalero rounds out the cast as James Maloney.

‘Christy’ was one of the most sought-after films heading into the Toronto Film Festival, but Black Bear, which also financed the project, opted to keep it for its own debut release.

The studio previously worked with Sweeney on the horror film ‘Immaculate’, and this marks their second collaboration.

The makers also have an Oscar campaign in the pipeline.
