Pat McCormack will look to continue his move towards world honours against hard-punching Mexican Miguel Parra on Saturday night.

Backed by a vociferous hometown crowd in Sunderland, McCormack is favourite to move to 8-0 in a contest that doubles up as a WBA welterweight eliminator.

Parra is on a three-fight winning streak and ranked 12th by the governing body, with McCormack seventh. The 32-year-old has claimed 17 of his 25 career wins by knockout.

Rolly Romero is the current WBA champion at a time when the 147-pound division is in a state of flux. Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan will contest the vacant IBF crown in a highly anticipated all-Irish rematch on September 13.

Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and Vergil Ortiz stepping up to super welterweight means there is a fairly open field to crown the next king of the division. As a standout in the amateur code who is now aged 30, McCormack knows the time is ripe to put himself into the conversation.

“I believe people have only seen about 65% of me and I’m only getting better,” he said. “In my last fight [vs. Robbie Davies Jr.], I proved I’m better than British level, and a win on September 6 puts me up onto the world stage.

“Parra is tough, game and been in there with some good people, so I’ve got an opportunity to make a statement.”
