MONTREAL – Maxime Filion scored twice, including a stoppage-time marker, as the Montreal Carabins defeated McGill 3-1 in U SPORTS men’s soccer action Friday at Stade CEPSUM.
Emile Legault opened the scoring for Montreal in the eighth minute. Filion doubled the lead at 37:01 with a penalty kick.
McGill cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 54th when midfielder Samuel Armstrong-Giroux, a kinesiology freshman from Montreal, struck from close range, assisted by Gustave Therrien-Ber and Pedro Gulli.
However, Filion sealed the win after the 90-minute mark on a setup from Sami McDuff.
Both sides combined for 19 fouls. McGill was booked twice, with yellow cards to Luke Rosettani (33′) and Maddox Bailey (85′). Montreal had cautions to Omar El Kalkouli (29′), Adam Benmoussa (33′) and Alexandre Pare-Varga (85′).
The Carabins had a 21-11 margin in attempted shots, with a 13-8 edge in shots on target. veteran ‘keeper Ludovyck Ciociola made eight saves for the Redbirds, while Joakim Milli turned aside five for Montreal. Corner kicks were 5-3 in favour of McGill.
The result improved Montreal’s record to 2-0-0, while McGill dropped to 0-1-0.
Next up, the Redbirds host Laval on Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium. Montreal visits UQTR the same day, also at 1 p.m. The postponed McGill-UQTR game from last Thursday has been rescheduled for Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in Trois-Rivieres.
