The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) said it has arrested a man following the disturbing alleged assault of a woman in downtown early Friday morning.

In a release, VPD said just after 6 a.m. on Friday, Sept.5, a 31-year-old woman was walking near West Pender and Beatty Street when she came across a naked man on top of a parked car.

Police say the man started yelling at the victim and ran at her, knocking her to the ground. He then proceeded to urinate on her.

Bystanders stepped in, called the police, and restrained the suspect.

Police say they have arrested a man in his 20s, and he was taken to hospital under the Mental Health Act.

The suspect currently remains in secure custody at the hospital.

VPD said it will forward a report to Crown counsel to consider criminal charges.

This incident comes after a downtown stranger attack in August, which sent a tourist to hospital.
